![]() To me this freedom is beautiful and this is the reason why I choose to work on 2D rather than a 3D software. If you can imagine something and then draw it then you can put anything you want on the screen”. Paraphrasing Eric Larson, one of the nine old men: “2D animation is limited by only 2 things - Your ability to imagine, and your ability to draw. This makes every step you take towards learning these bases a really solid step and I loved that.īut there’s something far more important. Then I hop into 2D animation where the fundamentals for animation I’m learning have remained the same for almost a hundred years, and if we talk about drawing fundamentals then we have to go centuries back. For me this is dozens of hours poured into knowledge that could become obsolete in a really short span of time (since software is evolving so fast). Why did you decide to use perspective drawing for the camera movements instead of 3D software?Īfter 4 years studying in a 3D program I faced a lot of obstacles that relied on the software (rendering and lighting issues, rigs breaking, you know the drill.) and the only way to avoid them was to dedicate a huge chunk of time to study the software. Here is a behind the scenes look at some of the scenes that used these perspective techniques: No 3D software was used in any area of the project so 100% of the film is 2D drawn, animated and painted “tradigitally”. I wanted to try making this kind of animations, so I decided to go on a full 2D animation approach. These animations never fail to give me goosebumps when I think whenever the backgrounds move, they have to draw the entire frame over and over again. This allowed them to move in space and tell richer stories long before 3D was invented and some of them still do these kinds of animation. While studying structural drawing and perspective I was inspired by how, almost since the beginning of 2D animation, animators used perspective drawing to emulate camera movements and rotations. This required me to dive deep into perspective drawing so I could draw and show on the screen what I was seeing in my head. So I definitely needed to develop the skills to be able to create the illusion of depth and be able to place the camera wherever I want with the lens I wanted to. "After his alcoholic father's death, a young man decides to sell the last memory of him - his taxi."Īs an avid movie watcher and an aspiring Director I wanted to create an animation where cinematography, lighting and composition are also main characters in the story. But right now I can tell you without a doubt, working in 2D animation every day, and seeing the audience's reaction to my first film, I'm the happiest I've ever been in my life and I can’t wait for the next one! I hope I can make it even better! Now that my short film is done I’m still not at the level I want to be, and I’m working on it. There were many times during the making of this short where I almost bailed but the promise of telling my own stories in the future kept me going. Right then and there I took a chance and decided to face my fears and use this short film to force myself to work on my fundamentals. ![]() There was no doubt in my heart that the answer was 2D frame-by-frame animation, and THE ONLY reason I wasn’t doing it already was because I didn’t want to face the fact that I was awful at drawing. For me it was more like “What are you truly passionate about? What do you love about animation?”. ![]() It wasn’t just “what kind of short film do you want to make?”. Years went by until I faced my graduation short film and I needed to make a choice. ![]() So, as a defense mechanism, I convinced myself that I didn’t need to learn how to draw. I entered the 3D Animation program at Veritas University and I was absolutely intimidated by the draftsmanship level other students in my generation had. I didn't pick up a pencil until I was 19 years old. Most artists will tell you they have drawn since they were little but that wasn’t my case at all. There’s a bit of an overcoming story behind this short.

Still, this may be a worthwhile feature for many systems sounding less open than mine. This worked fine and did the usual trick of providing more clarity and air at the expense of bass solidity and attack. I learned that the changes won’t register until you either quit iTunes or BitPerfect. Then it was time to start fiddling with BitPerfect’s settings. At this stage I would have a difficult time to choose because even though PureMusic was more transparent and precise, it also laid bare the somewhat sterile Macbook sound that BitPerfect compensated for so nicely. By contrast, PureMusic provided much more refinement, focus and transparency than either standard iTunes or BitPerfect with standard settings while keeping PRAT intact. But with more rhythm-driven music, I found BitPerfect a bit too much on the soft side and even though standard iTunes sounded more gray and colourful, it did have slightly more attack and this made the drum whacks carry more power. Somehow, I found BitPerfect to sound more engaging with its more widely spread soundstage. Sure enough: Pure Music was tighter, faster, more articulate. Still using the basic settings, I switched between BitPerfect and Pure Music version 1.65a. Then again, BitPerfect sounds smoother and friendlier than the other two programs, if I recall correcty. What surprised me though was that I wasn’t hearing the tightening up in the bass that I hear so clearly with Amarra and PureMusic. The music sounds more emotional, more enveloping and more interesting with BitPerfect enabled. It doesn’t take long to hear the differences: standard iTunes sounds a bit boring and gray compared to BitPerfect, the latter having a much wider and deeper soundstage. ![]() The USB cable used was the excellent KingRex uArt-USB-S. Using the basic settings, only having selected the PS Audio PWD MKII’s USB input as output in the BitPerfect’s settings, I listened carefully to iTunes with, and without BitPerfect. Switching from basic iTunes to BitPerfect I promised above to talk about sound foremost, so let’s skip to that right now! All the regular control is from iTunes, but there is a preference pane that offers 4 screens with various settings, as can be seen on the pictures below. I will however, compare BitPerfect directly with Pure Music on their sound merits alone.Īs can be seen in the above picture, BitPerfect has a minimal interface. But having said that, thus far, newcomer BitPerfect not once crashed while I used it. You can’t really compare these programs one on one because both PureMusic and Amarra offer much more functionality than BitPerfectmost important of which is FLAC playback, and, judging from the early BitPerfect reviews on the web, they could be more stable than BitPerfect. That compares nicely to BitPerfect’s 7,99 euro, doesn’t it? Amarra is the most expensive at 178 euro for the full version while Pure Music at 113 euro is less expensive, although still far from cheap. For Mac I have used two programs that apply a series of methods to achieve the same thing: Amarra and Pure Music. In the case of Windows there are various routes of shortening and/or purifying the “signal path”, Kernel Streaming being the most commonly known method. I don’t know the fine details but just like Windows computers have lots of resampling and mixing going on with their kmixer, something similar happens with Macs. However, I need to say a thing or two about my earlier experiences with similar programs. You can read all about that elsewhere on the web. What are the audible differences? Being more familiar with Windows computers, I won’t pretend to know exacty what BitPerfect does behind the scenes, nor will I bore you with a complete rundown of all its functionality. Below screenshot, as well as the rest, are of the V1 software. ![]() Meanwhile, there is a v3, shown in the main image screenshot above. Please note that this review is for version 1. Retail price when purchased in 2012 approximately 7,99 euro ![]() It made for an interesting comparison to PureMusic. It does this while maintaining the ease of use that iTunes offers.
